The Last Of The Human Freedoms…

Badlands, you gotta live it everyday

Let the broken hearts stand

As the price you’ve gotta pay

We’ll keep pushin’ till it’s understood

and these badlands start treating us good

Bruce Springsteen

I believe I have a great attitude and I take great pride in my ability to not allow negative events or people to bring me down. I of course live in Bucks County in a world filled with amazing conveniences. The biggest challenges I usually encounter are a slow playing foursome or no available treadmills at LA Fitness.

Several years ago one of my adult students gave me the book Man’s Search for Meaning by Victor Frankel. For those of you not familiar with the book it chronicles Frankel’s time in Auschwitz during World War II. Most of his fellow prisoners were killed or gave up on life, but miraculously Frankel survived. He believed it was because he was able to find meaning in life and hold onto that belief.

Frankel gives a whole new meaning to a positive attitude. Years later Frankel said “the last of the human freedoms is to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” I normally take great pride in my ability to choose my attitude however after reading Frankel’s book I realized my circumstances for choosing a great attitude are frivolous compared to Frankel’s circumstances.

To change your life, you must make a choice to take responsibility for your attitude, and to do everything you can to make it work for you regardless of the circumstances.
